Watering Wisdom: How (and When) to Water in Summer Heat
Help Solve One of the Season’s Biggest Problems—Over or Underwatering
At Nunan’s Florist & Garden Center, we hear it all summer long: “Why do my plants look stressed even though I’m watering?” The truth is, summer heat presents a challenge for both new and experienced gardeners. Whether you’re working with annuals, perennials, hanging baskets, or container gardens, finding the right watering rhythm can mean the difference between thriving and surviving.
Let’s break down the when, how, and how much—so you can feel confident and keep your plants happy all summer long.
🌞 When to Water
The best time to water is early in the morning, ideally between 6–9 AM. This allows moisture to soak into the soil before the sun’s heat causes rapid evaporation. Watering in the evening can lead to excess moisture overnight, which encourages disease and fungus.
Avoid midday watering if you can—most of it evaporates before it reaches the roots, and water droplets on leaves can act like tiny magnifying glasses, causing sunburn.
💧 How to Water
Here’s the golden rule: Water deeply, not lightly. A quick sprinkle every day barely wets the surface and encourages shallow roots. Instead, aim for a deep soak every few days, allowing roots to grow deeper and stronger.
For containers and hanging baskets—especially those in full sun—you’ll likely need to water daily in extreme heat. Check by sticking your finger an inch or two into the soil. If it’s dry, it’s time to water.
At Nunan’s, we grow 90% of our annuals and perennials right here on-site in our signature Nunan Grown pots, so we know what it takes to keep them healthy. If your Proven Winners Supertunias or summer perennials are wilting even after watering, it might be due to one of the next common mistakes…
❌ Signs You’re Over or Underwatering
-
Yellowing leaves + soft stems = too much water
-
Crispy brown edges or drooping in heat = too little water
-
Wilting in full sun but perking up in shade = heat stress (not necessarily water-related)
Using the right soil also makes a difference. We carry Espoma soils, Coast of Maine blends, and Jack’s Blue Fertilizer—all ideal for our Zone 6a conditions.
🌿 Bonus Tips from Nunan’s Experts
-
Mulch helps retain moisture and regulates soil temperature. A 2–3” layer of bark mulch around your beds can significantly reduce watering needs.
-
Water at the base of the plant to minimize leaf disease and ensure water reaches the roots.
-
Use self-watering pots or watering spikes for vacation coverage.
-
Install a simple drip irrigation system for raised beds or garden rows.
