A Brief History of Nunan’s Florist & Greenhouse

Albert D. Nunan started Nunan Florist & Greenhouses as a florist shop in Saugus, Massachusetts in 1917. Later, he relocated to Georgetown, Massachusetts. After a long and successful career, Albert passed the business down to his son Ken, who owned and managed Nunan’s for many years. In 1985, Ken was ready to retire and found two people who were eager to purchase the business.

Steve Flynn Sr. was born and raised in Middleton with 7 other siblings. During the summers and after school Steve and most of his siblings worked at Middleton Greenhouses located right down the street from their family home. During his high school years Steve knew he wanted to have a career in the agricultural world. A few years later, having a family of his own and pouring all his time into his work, Steve wanted a business of his own. Bill Guerrini was the grower there and a best friend to Steve who also lived in Middleton. Bill had the same passion for the agricultural world as Steve and spent most of his days on site taking care of all the crops. The two together decided that purchasing a place of their own was the best decision for them and their families. So, after meeting with Ken Nunan, a deal was made, a partnership was formed and an old business took on a new life.

Respectfully keeping Ken’s family name on the business, Steve and Bill grew Nunan’s into a larger and more diversified business. Over the last 30 years, Steve and Bill turned Nunan’s into what is today a full service Garden Center, Florist Shop, Nursery, Landscaping business, Plant Rental business and Interior Plantscaping business. Bill is semi-retired now but comes in several times a month to help with all the crops in the greenhouses. Steve’s sister Maureen followed Steve and Bill from the beginning and is the Manager of the Garden Center area where you can find all your indoor plants. Steve’s sister Maryanne is the Office Manager, his wife Christine works in the office, his son Stephen Jr. now has the role of Owner/General Manager and his other son Brody is a full time employee. Stephen Jr.’s son Jordan, now 3rd generation, is working full time on the property. Steve Sr.’s 3 daughters, his other siblings as well as grandchildren, nieces and nephews are always eager to lend a helpful hand during the busy spring, the holidays, or any special events when needed.

The Nunan Florist DifferenceThe Nunan Florist Difference

Most of our plants are grown on-site in our own greenhouses. This makes our plants hardier than the competition’s because they are perfectly acclimated to our local environment and are not exposed to damage during transportation, like many plants at the big box stores.

What is the secret to our success? What is the secret to our success?

We have never forgotten our core values: exceptional quality, value, and customer service. These key tenets are the secret to our success.

Next Generation, New Ideas

Stephen Jr. resides in Georgetown right next to Nunan’s. He has 4 children and has followed in his father’s footsteps. You will always see him on the property 7 days a week. Growing up in the family business Stephen Jr. has learned a great deal about the business, the agricultural industry and the need to stay diversified due to the slow seasons. Today we see and hear about Agritourism which involves any agriculturally based operation that brings visitors to a farm, such as the corn mazes and pick-your-own pumpkins. Going with this thought and doing a lot of research, Stephen Jr. proposed the idea of adding a mini golf course to the business and calling it Nunan’s Garden Golf. How does a mini golf course relate you might ask? Well, Nunan’s mini golf course is a very well designed garden atmosphere with no structures such as dinosaurs and windmills. It is a peaceful walk through beautiful gardens as you enjoy your game of mini golf. They planted their own greenhouse grown crops of annuals, perennials as well as nursery stock they carry yearly in their nursery. Many of the unique material is labeled so if you come across something you like, just flip over your score card and write down the plants you like on the “plant wish list” so you can return at your convenience and find them in their nursery or plant area.
