Fall Bulb Planting Guide: Tulips, Daffodils & Beyond

There’s something magical about seeing the first tulips, daffodils, and hyacinths bloom after a long New England winter. If you want a colorful spring garden, now is the time to plant! Fall is the season for bulbs, and with a little planning, you’ll be rewarded with a stunning display come April and May.

Why Plant Bulbs in Fall?

Spring-flowering bulbs need a period of cold dormancy to trigger growth. Planting in fall gives bulbs time to establish roots before the ground freezes. Our Zone 6a climate is ideal—cool autumn nights and warm soil help bulbs settle in quickly.

Choosing the Right Bulbs

At Nunan’s, you’ll find a wide selection of classic spring favorites:

  • Tulips – Bold colors, endless varieties, perfect for mass planting.

  • Daffodils – Cheerful, deer-resistant, and reliable year after year.

  • Hyacinths – Fragrant blooms in shades of pink, purple, and white.

  • Crocus & Snowdrops – Early risers that bring life to the late-winter garden.

  • Alliums – Striking globe-shaped flowers that add height and drama.

Planting Tips for Success

  1. Timing: Plant bulbs from late September through November, before the ground freezes.

  2. Location: Choose a sunny to partially shaded spot with well-drained soil. Bulbs don’t like “wet feet.”

  3. Depth: A good rule of thumb—plant bulbs three times as deep as their height. For example, a 2-inch bulb should be planted 6 inches deep.

  4. Spacing: Plant close together in clusters for a natural look and bigger color impact.

  5. Fertilizer: Mix in Espoma Bulb-tone at planting time. This organic fertilizer provides essential nutrients for strong roots and bigger blooms.

After Planting Care

  • Water thoroughly to help settle soil and start root growth.

  • Add a layer of mulch to insulate bulbs and reduce weed growth.

  • Mark your planting area so you don’t disturb bulbs when spring arrives.

Bonus Tip: Layer Your Bulbs

Want continuous color? Try the “lasagna” method—layering bulbs of different bloom times in the same hole. Plant larger daffodils deepest, tulips in the middle, and crocus or snowdrops on top. Come spring, you’ll enjoy waves of blooms!

Planting bulbs this fall is an investment in next year’s garden. With a little effort now, you’ll be greeted by cheerful blooms just when you need them most.
