How to Protect Trees and Shrubs From Winter Damage

Winter in New England can be tough on trees and shrubs—but with a few proactive steps, you can prevent most cold-weather damage before it starts. At Nunan’s, we help gardeners protect their landscapes all season long with trusted techniques and professional-grade products. Here’s what to do now to keep your plants healthy until spring.

1. Use Burlap to Block Wind and Sun

Cold winter winds and bright sun can dry out evergreens, especially broadleaf varieties like rhododendrons, boxwood, and holly. Wrapping or screening plants with burlap helps reduce moisture loss and prevents leaf scorch.

Best practice:

  • Install burlap screens on the windward side of plants

  • Keep burlap off foliage when possible to avoid moisture buildup

  • Secure with stakes and twine for stability during snowstorms

Our team can help you choose pre-cut burlap, stakes, and wraps sized for your shrubs.

2. Apply Anti-Desiccant Sprays

Evergreens continue to lose moisture through their leaves all winter, even when the ground is frozen. Anti-desiccant sprays (sometimes called anti-transpirants) create a protective waxy coating that reduces water loss.

When to apply:

  • Late fall or early winter, on a dry day above freezing

  • Reapply mid-winter if temperatures fluctuate

Nunan’s carries proven brands and can advise which plants benefit most.

3. Mulch for Insulation, Not Warmth

Mulch doesn’t keep plants warm—but it keeps soil temperatures stable, preventing freeze-thaw cycles that can damage roots and cause heaving.

Mulching tips:

  • Apply 2–3 inches of shredded bark or wood mulch

  • Keep mulch a few inches away from trunks and stems

  • Focus on newly planted trees and shrubs first

Bulk and bagged mulch options are available, and we’re happy to recommend the right type.

4. Protect Against Critters and Deer

Winter is peak season for hungry animals. Rabbits, voles, and deer often turn to bark and branches when food is scarce.

Effective protection includes:

  • Tree wraps or guards for young trunks

  • Hardware cloth at the base of shrubs

  • Deer repellents and physical barriers

Our experts can help you choose solutions based on your property and local wildlife pressure.

Winter Tree & Shrub Protection FAQs

Do all shrubs need burlap in winter?
No. Most deciduous shrubs don’t need protection, but evergreens and exposed plants benefit most.

Can I mulch too early?
Wait until the ground has cooled but before it freezes solid—this prevents pests from nesting.

Will snow damage my shrubs?
Heavy, wet snow can break branches. Gently brush snow off (never shake frozen branches).

When should I remove winter protection?
Late winter or early spring, once temperatures moderate and before new growth begins.
